Rector’s Writings

Our Rector, Rev Dr Steve Griffiths, is a prolific author and writer. Since the mid-90s, he has developed a reputation as one of the foremost and creative theologians in Britain and, internationally, as one of the leading academics in the field of Christian youth ministry. Here are some of the ways in which you can engage with his thinking…

On a day-to-day basis, you can follow Steve’s ministry through Twitter @stmaryslinton

Steve’s blog, ‘Rector’s Ramblings’, is the place to engage with Steve’s thinking as it develops; his theological reflections on contemporary issues as well as church history, practical theology, pastoral ministry, youth ministry and reflective practice. Also, you will find his sermons there, available for download or print.

Here are Steve’s books:

1. ‘Redeem the Time’ (2001)

This is Steve’s PhD thesis. It explores the doctrine of sin in the writings of John Owen 1616-1683. Owen was Oliver Cromwell’s Chaplain and his theology underpinned the Cromwellian era. In this book, Steve explores the notion of sin as it affects the individual, as well as how sin can impact both church and state. It is an historical study with important lessons to be learnt for today.

2. ‘God of the Valley’ (2003)

This book looks at the process of grief and bereavement. It is a highly personal book, exploring the issue of loss through Steve’s own story of coping with the death of his first wife, his sister and his best friend – all within months of each other. He explores key biblical passages that meant a great deal to him and have helped him gain a better understanding of bereavement.

N.B ‘God of the Valley’ is due to be re-published in a Second Edition in November 2010. Watch this space for details…

3. ‘East End Youth Ministry 1880-1957’ (2007)

This is Steve’s MA dissertation. He explores the history of youth ministry in the East End of London from 1880-1957, with particular regard to the Settlement Movement and the work of the church in Canning Town during that period.

4. ‘A Christlike Ministry’ (2008)

Steve looks at key events in the life of Christ and uses these to develop models for youth ministry. The key events are Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension and Second Coming. This book has been hailed as pushing back the boundaries of thinking in the field. It has been critically acclaimed and has been the subject of rigorous academic debate at Conferences across the world.

5. ‘Grensesprengende’ (2009)

For Norwegian speakers amongst you, Steve has written two chapters of this book. All chapters, including his, were based on academic papers given at a Youth Ministry Conference in Norway in 2008.

This book is available in Norway only – if you want to purchase a copy, please contact Steve on
